Although the historic sites of the city have been declared a World Heritage Site, Hue cannot be described as a particularly attractive city. Built as it is on the banks of the Perfume River, vast tracts of the city were flattened in the 1968 Tet offensive (including large parts of the historic fomer Imperial capital - The Citadel). It's a relatively large city (population in excess of 300,000), but most things of interest to the traveller/tourist are to be found between the two bridges on either side of the river (with most hotels and restaurants on the south/east bank). |
| | Most tourists travel to see the Nguyen Royal Tombs, The Citadel and Thien Mu Pagoda, and while it may not be particularly attractive, it certainly has enough character and things to do for a couple of days stay (and also the Tropical Garden Restaurant, which provides some of the best Vietnamese cooking!) |
| | Close as it is between mountain and sea, one definate downside to Hue is the weather - it is one of the wettest places in Vietnam! We were lucky that we had excellent weather, but even then there was a pervading dampness to everything. |
