Balanced with the freneticism of Bangkok or the calm of the beaches to the south (we went to Ao Nang/Krabi) is the wonderfully laid-back city of Chiang Mai. It may be Thailand's second biggest city but it feels so mellow and laid back, you'd never believe it. Wats abound in Chiang Mai, but you have access to mountains, forests/jungles, indigenous villages, waterfalls and the spectacular Wat Doi Suthep (16kms out of Chiang Mai perched above the city), a very easy ride from the city (just stop a sawngthaew).
