  • Through many different internet sites, you can get a double room for 2 people with breakfast for about $35/40

Unique Qualities: The great thing about this place is that its right in the middle of China Town, very clean, all mod cons (including small pool on 21st floor), essentially a business hotel for locals/Chinese rather than the overpriced hotels in downtown Bangkok. A little on the atmosphereless side, but that's more than made up by its location. Walk out the door at night and you're in the middle of an incredibly dynamic, exciting place full of locals (Chinese and Thai) with none of the tourist-orientated activity of Patpong etc. People eating on the street by the thousands, shopping for food and Chinese CDs, more eating etc.. And you can walk to the major sites! plus only 10 minutes to the river ferry

  • Modern, air conditioned, spacious marble foyer with comfortable chairs and friendly staff greet you on first instance, although reception could be a little more efficient. Rooms can vary apparently, but rooms on 5th floor were spacious, functional and clean. You can open windows, although humidity and street noise may prevent you doing so! A/c units are old and somewhat noisy. Had the slightly odd experience of having to take a shower with my head at an angle - ceiling of the bathroom when standing in the bath is somewhat low!

Breakfasts are fine - buffet style with European, Thai and Japanese breakfasts on offer, even if the breakfast room is somewhat clinical and anodine. Same can be said about the Rosirin Bar and Restaurant - doesn't look the place you would want to spend time in it, even if the food is good.

One huge plus for the Viengtai hotel in this area is the very pleasant swimming pool, found in the courtyard off 3 rd Floor - very welcome place to head for after the humidity of the city.

Surrounds are a little too European for my tastes - more fried eggs and bacon than rice and noodles, and only 100 metres from the Khoa San Road - but even so, great location, comfortable, functional hotel, very 'easy' place to stay - and that swimming pool is an enormous bonus.

Unique Qualities: Location is crucial when staying in Bangkok - my preference being near to the old city rather than the modern hotel blocks of Pat Pong. Viengtai certainly fits the bill is this quarter, with the Royal Palace and Wat Pho being a 10 minute walk away.

Book through asiarooms.com - cheapest I found on the net.
