Getting TO/AROUND: Ayuthaya to Bangkok and vice versa is straightforward.

Buses arrive/depart :- BKK northern bus station, AYU on Thanon Pamaphrao a few minutes walk from Wat Ratburana. Very regular.

Trains: BKK - Hualamphong station (via airport). Station in AYU is on the east side of the river. A little ferry will take you across - moreorless walk staright ahead of you as you exit the station until you reach the river bank.. There are approximately 6 or 7 trains per day from BKK . First one is 7am, second 8.20am - a gap until about 11am. Approximately same number return - 3 of them after 5pm, which makes Ayuthaya a great day trip destination out of the city. One way ticket is 20baht - pay at the ticket kiosk in both stations. On some a/c trains, there's a surcharge of 20 baht if you want a seat in the a/c carriages - pay on board.

Bikes are a good option to hire in AYU (very flat as well as the ruins being spread out). Good place to hire is right outside the railway station as you head from the ferry (right hand side). BRING YOUR PASSPORT.

Getting TO/AROUND: Recent visit highlighted just how spread out the ruins in Ayuthaya are. I mentioned bicycle as one option, but this could be extremely strenuous in the humidity and heat of the city. A more expensive option is the hire of a Tuk Tuk to take you round. There's a set rate of 200 baht per hour and can be excellent value - ironically, the longer you use the service, the better the value. (its also worth noting that a single Tuk Tuk journey is approximately 40 -50 baht from the train station to one wat).
For 4 hours (discounted to 700 baht), I went to the wats on the periphery (Yai Chai Mongkhon: Phanan Choeng: Chai Wattanaram: Phuttaisawan: Lokaya Sutha: Chetharam) and then dropped off at Phra Si Sanphet. I was then able to walk to the other main wats I wanted to include. It was the best A$22 I spent as there was no way I could have fitted so many in to one day
