Visited it once in november 2002 and had a stay of three days in this remote part of Australia The Cape York Peninsula is a vast wilderness. The coastline has few settlements and most of it is inaccessible except by boat.
There are many miles of white sand beaches, rocky headlands, river mouths and associated sandflats, as well as inshore and offshore reefs.
The variety of species of fish that queue up to take a fly & lure could baffle a marine biologist and the sight-fishing is phenomenal. Also bird and mammal species are enormous and several endimic species can be found here.
Offshore there are several tuna and mackerel species and many trevally species. Along the beaches are giant herring, enough queenfish to drive you nuts, flats fishing for golden trevally and Aussie permit.
Cape York Peninsula, 280 mi (451 km) long, Northern Queensland, Australia, between the Gulf of Carpentaria and the Coral Sea. It is largely tropical jungle and sparsely populated. The Northern Peninsula Aboriginal Reserve is there. Weipa (1991 pop. 2,510) is the largest town. |
On the side you see a picture (I boroughed it) how rough the situation can be! Even more rougher then here! |
