We left Hallstatt for Vienna, excited at what lay ahead of us in this beautiful city.
We took the train and from Achnang Pucheim onwards we could sit back and enjoy the 2 and a half hour journey. We were lucky in that we had a whole compartment to ourselves for most of the journey. This was in part due to me lying down across the three seats and Topp telling people who wanted to come in that I was sick. However about an hour from our destination a school group of teenagers boarded and our game was up. It was good while it lasted!!
A smoke filled compartment later and we were there. Finally!!
Our first point of call was the hotel reservations desk. As Vienna was a last minute trip, we hadn't made any arrangements for a hotel. We came away with a hotel right in the old town, about 300 metres from Stephansdom, for 100 Euros per night, which considering the location wasn't at all bad. However if I ever come back to this city, I know how compact it is and wouldn't have a problem staying outside the city and take advantage of its excellent transport system. Having said that though I do not regret where I stayed.
On taxi ride to the hotel I saw nothing that made me go "wow", and I was kind of disappointed. Our driver told us about the zone system of the city and he was quite adament that this was a beautiful place. I had yet to be convinced.
Even the hotel from the outside look uninspiring, I thought we had been conned. But as soon as I stepped inside and saw the old French style lift and the round marble staircase, I knew it would be ok. The hotel was situated on the second and third floor, the fourth floor being purely residential. Having checked in we found our room to be at the end of the round corridor. It being a circular building, we had a room with our windows opening out to the inside of the building. The noise rate from the other rooms were magnified times five. |
