    DEli and BREAKFAST for me
    also near my favourite haunts of MEC, Trailheads and Bushtakah

    Favorite Dish: in their own words ..... " Watch your bagels being made!
    We believe in a hands-on approach at the Bagelshop. All day long, seven days a week, our wood-burning oven crackles with heat as the subtle scent of wood smoke fills the air. Our delicious bagels are rolled by hand, boiled in honey water, and put into the oven, to emerge fifteen minutes later as golden brown delicacies. It's not uncommon to walk out of the Bagelshop with your favourite bagels hot in your bag. Come and watch the "Best Bagels in the World" being made in front of your eyes. "

    We've had a string of overseas visitors to Ottawa for a family wedding;
    so during the past month, I've enjoyed meals at this friendly family eatery;
    Rice wraps sititng on plastic platters, so that they do not stick together.
    One then depending on order, can have vegtarian of with various other meats,
    but common to all, are Mint, Basil leaves, Bean Sprouts, Rice Vermicelli,
    to be added onto the damp rice wrap / skin whicjh is carefully folded,
    dipped into a Nuoc van sauce, other suaces are the Satay like and Chilli garlic.

    Pho-s also available
    and the special on the special boeard includes Hai Nam chicken and Rice [ dribbles for me, thinking about it

    Healthy eating for about C$10, unending pot of Chinese tea.

    Stoneface Dolly's: Now, that's...

  • Stoneface Dolly's: Now, that's down-home comfort
    ***** Stoneface Dolly's: Excellent and Cheap *****
    ==== Sun rating (out of 5 stars) === April 13, 2001 ===
    'A rough diamond that De Beers missed. That's how I'll start the review.'
    'You wouldn't dare,' growled my partner, who detests cute or clever.
    Normally, I would have resisted the cliche but, under the influence of much good food, my critical sense went all soft. I was wrong, too. ***The diamond is not rough, it just has a plain setting.
    What we are talking about is Ottawa's -- as far as I know -- ONLY SOUTH AFRICAN restaurant that serves brilliant food in a tiny space that, dare I say it, lacks polish.
    Forget the unfashionable location and the room with the feel of a 1950 luncheonette. Two young artisans turn out delicious dishes, two quick servers do double duty, and an enthusiastic owner gives guided tastings of his South African wines. It doesn't get any better, except in places that charge twice as much.
    === We split our dinner. I took the ethnic side, starting with the African soup. Hearty, thickened by soft-cooked rice, sharpened by tangy tomato and a little chili, aromatized faintly by peanuts -- unusual but immediately acceptable as universal comfort food. I should have ordered just a cup but finished the bowl.
    === My partner took the warm vegetable salad of beautifully sweet caramelized red peppers and onion with greens, dressed with a tomato concasse and balsamico, topped with a large round of potato-crusted goat cheese. The combination worked just fine.
    === The kitchen loves to caramelize vegetables and does them well. More of them garnished the grilled salmon, also accompanied by fruit-studded couscous and warm salad greens. Again, a good combination but some flaws in the execution. The salmon was uneven, dry at one end, and the couscous grainy.
    === The well-spiced jerk chicken was served with a bouquet of flavours -- aromatic basmati, sweet chutney, cooling raita, two salsas, tomato and black beans, and slices of baked banana. Great variety, not a boring bite.
    *****The last touch, a Belgian chocolate cake, was simple and tasted homemade -- generous with very good chocolate but dense and drying fast. We didn't reject it, though.
    *****I recommend Stoneface Dolly's with a warning: Don't all go at once because the place is small; reserve before going but by all means go.

    Citizen Special ;Wed Jan 10
    This is a comfort food time of year, when cold weather brings on a yearning for thick, rich soups and robust dishes.
    *** Owner Bob Russell says 'our food is simple, gourmet and home style with an international flare, whereas old-style comfort food often is meat loaf, chicken pot pie, hot beef sandwiches or shepherd's pie. Now, in modern times, with the concern of eating healthy and appreciating international cuisine, our menu reflects these trends.'

    ==== On the menu, customers may find creamy breakfast soup offering a delicious mixture of potato, bacon and toast (croutons); marinated grilled chicken with garlic mashed potatoes or polenta; black bean penne with chicken, portabello mushrooms and roasted red peppers. **** A favourite weekend brunch item is eggs Natasha with smoked salmon and spinach in lemon diablo (spicy white sauce) offered with fruit salad, special home fries, homemade breads and freshly squeezed fruit juices.

    Favorite Dish: Pat Mcgrath, The Ottawa Citizen / Jeff Russell and his father/partner Bob Russell display a spinach salad in their restaurant, Stoneface Dolly's.

     Good that Ottawa has so many biking routes, and a place to hire a bicycle near the Chateau Laurier Hotel. Also I think I would like the Canadian Canoe Museum, since I used to do a lot of canoeing when I was younger.
