Tenggerese men (c) ukirsari

The only Hindu people remains

People of Tengger are Hindu, not muslim or christian like another Javanese people. The story dating back to the ancient Majapahit era, when Islam spread to east Java by the merchants from Middle East and the kings of central Java. The people and kingdom of east Java separated into 2; going up to Bromo crater [who still be there nowadays as Tenggerese] and another move to Bali [Balinese] and also extended to Lombok island [the King of Karangasem geniality >> see later on my Lombok and Ampenan pages at Nusa Tenggara section].

Youngsters of Bromo :) (c) ukirsari - Tengger Caldera

Youngsters of Bromo :) (c) ukirsari

"Amit, nggih!"

For conversation, we can use local sub-dialect of east Java style lingo since the local adopted several Java vocabulary for daily conversation. As an "open" place from Probolinggo, Malang, Pasuruan and Lumajang, yes, we can use east Java lingo as well. And do not forget to say "amit, nggih" if you want to take picture or touch their stuffs [for seller]. Amit just like "nyuwun sewu" in central Java dialect, but less polite [yes, the highest is always taken from central Java lingo :)].
