Aberdeen- The Granite City

Aberdeen...

Random street in Aberdeen
Our first stop of the trip was the northern Scottish coastal city of Aberdeen. Built along the banks of the rivers Dee and Don, and is home of the burgeoning off-shore oil and energy industries.

We flew into Edinburgh airport and were picked up by my friend Brian. The drive was foggy, misty, and we were unable to see much- but as we pulled into Aberdeen- the fog lifted, the sun came out to shine, and we could see the bright blue ocean extending out. Was not sure what to expect of Aberdeen- but loved the majestic granite buildings that emerged from the fog.

The people were amazingly friendly, and while there wasn't much in terms of the typical tourist attractions to see with our limited transportation, the night life was certainly entertaining!
The shoreline
After settling into our room, Brian and his friends walked us to the coast to see the beach. Gorgeous. I really enjoyed just sitting there, watching the waves roll in. We wandered about for a bit, before stopping for ice cream at one of the many stores lining the boardwalk.
Brian's flat was right near the University of Aberdeen- which was one of my favorite places in Aberdeen.

Located in Old Aberdeen, the University is the 3rd oldest in Scotland, and the 5th oldest in the United Kingdom. The campus is beautiful- cobblestone drives and ivy covered buildings. The University is a leading research and teaching school in the fields of medicine and sciences.

We happened to be there at the time of an international music festival- so there were always plenty of people wandering about.

You take me back to my youth-King's College hasn't changed since I frequented it, I see. And many's the day and night I've spent at the beach. In all I lived there for 7 years as student, teacher, wife and mother, Time I paid it a visit, huh.
