The OTHER City

I'm terrible, I know

I spent a glorious four months living in the West End of this "fair city" while attending the University of Glasgow. When I arrived, I had no clue how to get anywhere, where anything was, and what one should do. Soon after my arrival, however, I found myself oriented- and running around nonstop- either shopping (which I have a terrible fondness for!) going to class, or stopping into one of the many museums and galleries around the city (most of which are free!)
Buchanan Street- on a not so busy day!
It is easy to see why Edinburgh is the more visitor-friendly city between the two. Quaint, cobblestone roads and a looming castle on a hill- it is very much the image of Scotland that one has in mind when thinking of medieval times and life.

Glasgow has a distinct personality of its own. The streets of Glasgow's city centre are always bustling with people, and the night life spectacular. The city itself is a wonderfully modern mix of the old and the new- beautiful gothic architecture standing next to shabby, run down store fronts. I love the mix.

People are friendly, students even more so. The University and West End are gorgeous (albeit a bit on the expensive side) and I found myself settling easily into the daily routine of classes and haunting local coffeeshops- of which there are plenty. It might take time to get used to the difference between Edinburgh and Glasgow- but wait long enough, and you'll come around to Glasgow's rough charm!
What I miss most about Glasgow is being able to wander the city streets, watching interactions between people, and listening to the lively chatter and multitude of accents being flung about.

As previously mentioned, the shopping is fantastic, and nothing beats spending a day in the Borders Book on Buchanan Street, sipping a latte and reading a good novel.
