With no natural resources and no agriculture, Singapore has become one of the richest nations in South East Asia, after Japan and Brunei. Singapore is quite small in area only some 224 square miles (580sq.m), roughly diamond shaped and situated only 86 miles (136km) north of the equator. Singapore is at the maritime crossroads of South East Asia, where all ships must pass.
We have visited Singapore several times now and we never seem to tire of it. There are lots of sights to see, things to do, streets to explore, and if you want you can shop till you drop. In the evening the areas of Boat Quay and Clarks Quay come alive. At the side of the river, you can relax in the different restaurants while you watch the colourful bum-boats take passengers up and down. There is food here to suit every taste, Indian, Italian, Vietnamese, and all the others. Our particular favourite is the Java restaurant on Boat Quay where they make terrific satay and beef rendang. Try it!
The Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system is probably the easiest way to get around. It’s cheap, clean and very safe, although the taxis in the city are good too. I wouldn’t recommend the pedicabs though, although they are fun you can get ripped off.
