Although many people visit Malaysia each year it still remains very unspoilt. Malaysia is in the heart of South East Asia close to the equator. It extends from Thailand in the North, down to the Straits of Jahore opposite Singapore. To the west lies the Indonesian island of Sumatra and to the east, Sabah and Sarawak. The people are Islam and religion pervades every aspect of every day life. Penang is an Island lying off the west coast of peninsular Malaysia, and is joined to the mainland by the Penang Bridge. It covers 110 square miles (285 sq km) and rises abruptly from its beaches to it’s highest point Penang Hill at 2,693 (821m) above sea level. The views from Penang Hill are spectacular looking over George Town (it’s capital) and the Penang Bridge. We visited Penang last year and stayed for 12 relaxing days and nights at the end of our holiday, and after all the hustle and bustle of both Dubai and Singapore, it was very welcome. The main tourist areas of Penang are its capital and the northern beach resort of Batu Ferringhi. We stayed about 10 minutes Batu Ferringhi, which although was right at the end of the resort, it was easy and remarkably cheap to get a taxi into the town for the many excellent restaurants and the night market. |
