  • Hamburg is a traditional musical city. I think you can call it the 'German Broadway'. For years famous productions like 'Phantom of the Opera', 'Cats' and 'Buddy Holly' have been sold out in Hamburg. Since 2002 the city has a new musical: Disney's 'Koenig der Loewen' (Lion King). At the musical arena in the Hamburger Hafen (port of Hamburg). Ticket-hotline: 0049-1805-114-113. Prices start at 33 Euro. Other musicals running in Hamburg are "Titanic" and "Abba".

  • Hamburg - One of the Alster swans
  • One of the Alster swans

  • Hundreds of Swans live on the Alster and the surrounding waterways in downtown Hamburg. Those huge, proud waterbirds fit perfectly into the scenary of beautiful Hamburg and the rich houses at the Alster. But did you know that the city employes a man whose job it is to care for the swans? Father Swan (Schwanenvater) Olaf Niess takes good care of the birds.

Each year in November it is a great spectacle when he and his helpers drive around on the Alster with motorboats and catch every swan. Hundreds of animals are brought to their winter home. A small pond in Hamburg called Muehlenteich (Mill's Pond). There they have better chances to get through the winter healthy.

And then in spring it is another spectacle with hundreds of people watching when the Schwanenvater opens the gates and hundreds of swans get out of their winter home to swim back on the canals of Hamburg to reach their "summer residence" - the Alster.

Those tunnels sure beat having to brave the elements at this time of year, not to mention the traffic any time of year. I wish Paris and Rio had this kind of tunnel system.
