Hundreds of Swans live on the Alster and the surrounding waterways in downtown Hamburg. Those huge, proud waterbirds fit perfectly into the scenary of beautiful Hamburg and the rich houses at the Alster. But did you know that the city employes a man whose job it is to care for the swans? Father Swan (Schwanenvater) Olaf Niess takes good care of the birds.
Each year in November it is a great spectacle when he and his helpers drive around on the Alster with motorboats and catch every swan. Hundreds of animals are brought to their winter home. A small pond in Hamburg called Muehlenteich (Mill's Pond). There they have better chances to get through the winter healthy.
And then in spring it is another spectacle with hundreds of people watching when the Schwanenvater opens the gates and hundreds of swans get out of their winter home to swim back on the canals of Hamburg to reach their "summer residence" - the Alster.
