Montreal Warnings Or Dangers

Driving/Parking: A danger to SANITY!!!!
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is more a danger to your sanity than to anything else: Champlain Bridge!
    THE BUSIEST BRIDGE IN CANADA!
    Rush hour here is terrible..from 6am to 9am and 3:30pm to 6:30pm. Friday's it's even longer.

I live across the bridge and got used to it. (I work afternoon shifts anyways..) BUT if your a tourist, even thought it may be cheaper to get a hotel outside, just get a hotel ON THE ISLAND!
    :)

    Taxes: EVERY FLIGHT you take...
  • Tip Rating:
  • EVERY FLIGHT you take ..domestic OR international comming out of Montreal, you HAVE too pay the 15$ AIF. It's to make the airport nicer and stuff. The best way to do this is to use your credit card and pay at the green machines (with the AIF/FAA signs). If you do this you won't have to stay in line when crossing the security. IF YOU LIKE SAVING MONEY (and being annoying) you can tell them there is no way in hell you'll pay an extra tax after all the taxes paid in this country!! What will happen is that they will take you in a room and have you write why you won't pay..once you've writen a few lines of whack..they let you go free to your plane!!
    :D

Taxes: About tax refunds in Quebec:...
  • Tip Rating:
  • About tax refunds in Quebec: GET TO AIRPORT EARLY! To get tax refunds, you need to pass by the custom bureau before (in Dorval, it's in the arrival floor to the right of the elevators) so that the custom officer can look at EVERY item and stamp the bill. If he doesn't see the item, he will still stamp them..but a stamp saying he hasn't seen the merchandise, hence not garenteeing your refund! :(

    Beggers: Like in any city....
  • Tip Rating:
  • Even if Montreal is a booming city, you will propably encounter sqeegee people or homeless folks. They usualy ask for money and if say you have none they usually just walk away.

Safety or not: Lower in town (Ontario street)...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Lower in town (Ontario street) is a seedier part of town. Drug-addicted prostitutes, heroin addicts etc. I would not go in the bars on this street at night as sometimes bikers blow them up. During the day, it's safer, but you can still feel and see a bit of poverty and prostitutes in a very bad shape. also, don't do like me and troll your hand on window stills as one day I almost had a seringue plucked in my hand!!

At night, I don't even think about coming here. No gangs or things like that..but it's just a bad part of town..

At night, also avoid Montreal-North (East of PIE-IX street, north of Sherbrooke street AND keep off Pascal street.) because there are gang wars.)Taxis won't even bring you there anyways...or pick you up!

    Oh..and the Parc-Extention district too..

Maybe if you actually visit a native territory you would see what we wear. We wear turtles and bears and wolves on our clothes. fashion changes , but stereotypes don't. Seems ignorant to think that a white person would have actual native articles.
