the event of the millennium I love my tiny village (pop. 1600): it's on a nice lake, there's mountains in our backyard, a decently sized town 10 minutes away, and the people are friendly. The drawback is that nothing ever happens here... no one wins the lottery, no one writes a nobel-winning book, no one gets murdered. There's a tacky tourist attraction (swissminiature) and osama's brother (well one of the 52) lives here, undisturbed and undisturbing. Even the local medias did not find this fact interesting enough to mention Melide, let alone the international press. Well, these are the basic facts of Melide.
But in 2002 things changed: for a few days we had our moment of glory: the village waterpipe exploded... and the techies did not seem to be able to find out where it had exploded. For 2 days we were left without water, and for further 2 we had water but it's was not potable. From nearby Lugano they started ferrying thousands of free cute waterbags to us, and we too finally made the news. Mission accomplished: now the village has gone back to sleep and we're looking forward to the next millennium for something else to happen |

still 2002... another event... In November, just a few days after having been left without water, we were flooded. The world has gone mad, the sleepy village has had 2 memorable events. Now please, we've had our share, let us sleep for another thoudan years. it's someone else's turn |
