Getting TO/AROUND: I found trains very comfortable and convenient for long distance travel. Thai trains may not be too frequent but they are excellent. I used them for long distance trips (6 hours and up) and they were really good. On sprinter trains you also get free food and drinks - on the overnight train from Nong K^hai to bangkok no food was served.
It's wise to buy your ticket a day ahead, since seats are numbered... so unless you have a ticket you can't border the train of your choice

    Transportation: medium distance travel

Getting TO/AROUND: For medium distance travel (for up to 5 hours rougly) I used buses, which are less comfortable but much faster; on most you also are given free drinks and some sort of snacks. Roads vary from adequate to good, drivers from adequate to really bad: as a rule of thumb government-owned buses tend to employ safe enough drivers. I have bothered with a private company once, and it was once too many.

    Transportation: short distance travel

Getting TO/AROUND: Short distance: local buses are ok; they are not too comfortable but they are acceptable. In some places you also get to ride songathews (2 rows minivans) or jumbos, which have the same level of comfort as local buses, but are smaller and friendlier. As for tuk-tuks - no comment, avoid them if you can - but I may be biased because I was involved in a tuk-tuk crash.

'Wat To Phae' is not as listed in http://www.indexmundi.com/zp/th/24640.htm (N18.80 E97.91), nor does it match my experience: I live around here & wat is 5km SW / Khun Yuam. Mae Hong Son is ~45km N. I can send you photos if you pass me your email address.
