Zagreb is Ana’s city… Ana that was very late picking me up at the station, thus making me wonder if I had got off at the right place, and with no money, since I had forgotten to go to the exchange office, and left her phone number in Ljubljana. Ana’s who’s possibly the worst tour guide in the world but the sweetest funniest friend on Earth too. Ana who thought the Croatian Theatre was the Bosnian Theatre and who mistook the catholic church of Saint Nicholas for an Orthodox church. Ana who undertook the Herculean task to show me the wonders of her city and the charm of her family in only 12 hours, and succeeded.
It was a rushed visit but the memories are still vivid. The architecture is what impressed me the most: lots of baroque buildings and churches were built at the time of the Austro-Hungarian empire, and there’s only one word that describes them: opulent. Then there are picturesque open-air markets, and the shortest funicular I have ever seen (useless but cute!). There are wide squares and streets with open air cafés and a majestic cathedral. There are churches with roofs covered in mosaics, and a beautiful old town. And then there is the smell of freshly baked bread at every corner.
