Getting TO/AROUND: The best way to get around barcelonais on foot, since you get to see a lot more. But if you are pressed for time (or have to go a long distance) then the metro is your best bet. There are only a few lines, so it's impossible to get confused - and each trip costs 1 euro, regardess of the distance you cover.
One sidenote: unlike metros and undergrounds in other cities, where from each entrance you can take any direction you want, here you have to pay more attention: often there's a different entrance for each direction

Getting TO/AROUND: Barcelona is well-linked by train with many european cities - france and belgium in particular - but there are also direct night train from switzerland and italy (and i guess from many more countries).
The train is also a comfortable way to get out of the city for day trips: figueras, girona and sitges are particularly recommended
