Getting TO/AROUND: Getting out of Damascus is easy, provided you know which bus station you need to go to. Harasta Garage bus station (quite far out of town, you'll need a taxi to get there) is the terminal for luxury buses throught most of the country (don't worry, luxury means you'll pay about 2 dollars for a 3 hours trip). Baramke garage, in the new town, is more accessible but doesn't serve so many destinations: the most useful one being the direct luxury buses to Bosra (leaving a 8 AM, 10 AM, and 12 AM).

Getting TO/AROUND: I'm sure there's a cheaper alternative to get to central damascus from the airport, but most flights tend to land and take off in the middle of the night - someone suggested because landing taxes are cheaper. Whatever the reason is - in the middle of the night you might not want to bother trying to find out about the cheapest way to get into town. My suggestion is to have a taxi arranged by the hotel beforehand: it costs about 15 dollars and saves you a lot of unnecessary hassle. During the rest of your stay, however, it's highly unnecessary that you'll need to use one to explore the city, as everything seems to be within walking distance.

After seeing Aleppo, I've been a great Syria fan, and there's no way I should miss Damascus. Thanks for these great pages on this great city. 2008, Damascus' year as the city of Arab culture, should be a great time to see Damascus.

it's called mahalabia, and is indeed delicious! if only they were twice the size! it's a milk based desert, sweet, and set a bit like jelly (or jello if you're that way inclined).

Great travel writing. Don't suppose I'll get there myself any time soon, so it's good to have you as my armchair guide.

I agree with your opinion on Sultan Hotel. There's also 1 double room without a bathroom downstairs. It's my favourite! It's big, shady and with balcony and only 16 dollars.
