French Polynesia Transportation

Transportation: International flights
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': TO
    Category: Airplane
Getting TO/AROUND: All international flights arrive at the Tahiti Faaa International Airport near Papeete.

We came by Air Tahiti Nui and were very satisfied. We were welcomed on board by smiling Polynesian hostesses who offered us a Tiare Tahiti flower. Service and food are excellent and so are the seats (2 near the window and 4 in the middle) with a private screen for every passenger with 6 movies, games and flight info).

Air Tahiti Nui has three flights a week from Paris and six from Los Angeles. It will take you 22h from Paris and 7.5 h from Los Angeles to Tahiti.

Economy-class passengers are allowed 20 kg (44 pounds) and a carry-on bag that will fit under your seat (115 cm/45 in).

    Transportation: Air Tahiti
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Airplane
Getting TO/AROUND: Air Tahiti operates the domestic scheduled flights between the islands of French Polynesia and provides a well-run air service.

They offer four different air passes, allowing you to combine several islands. The restrictions are that one is allowed one stop per island and the pass is valid for 28 days. It is a good service when you are thinking of doing some island hopping.

    Transportation: Air Moorea

    Category: Airplane
Getting TO/AROUND: Air Moorea provides 10-minute air taxi service with 13 to 19 flights daily from Tahiti to Moorea. The 18-passenger Dornier departs every hour on the hour from the Air Moorea terminal which lies within easy walking distance from the International Airport of Tahiti Faaa.

    Transportation: By Sea
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Ship/Boat
Getting TO/AROUND: For those who like the idea of exploring the islands by sea, and don't want to rough it, there is for example the 'Wind Song', a cruise ship that debarks from Tahiti and visits Raiatea, Bora Bora, Tahaa, Huahine and Moorea in seven days.

    Transportation: By Car
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Car/Motor Home
Getting TO/AROUND: If you want to tour the bigger islands like Tahiti, Moorea, Huahine and Raiatea and want to explore a little bit of the interior than it is best to hire a car. There are car rentals on all those islands and you can easily book it through your hotel.

You will drive on the right side of the road and a valid driver's license of your country is enough. Speed limits are 40 km/h in the towns and 60 km/h on the roads outside the towns. Seat belts are mandatory for driver and passenger.

    Transportation: By Scooter
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Motorcycle
Getting TO/AROUND: Some islands are so small that you can easily rent a scooter to make a trip around the island. You can rent your vehicle through most of the hotels. Prices include unlimited mileage and insurance. Gas is extra.

Wearing a helmet is mandatory and you need to show your driver's license.

    Transportation: By bike

  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Bicycle
Getting TO/AROUND: In most hotels you can rent a bike for minimum 4 hours. It will cost you 1000 CFP (8,38 EUR). Most bikes are the same. No gear and a basket on the handlebar.

    Transportation: Le Truck
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Bus
Getting TO/AROUND: Some islands have a bus service around the island. Transportation is done by "Le truck".

Le truck is a brightly painted wooden cabin mounted on the rear of a flatbed truck. In de cabin you will find wooden benches along each side of the cabin and sometimes one in the middle.

Each Le truck has a specific route, with the destination usually painted on the top or sides of the vehicle.

They have started to replace these folkloric vehicles by modern, air-conditioned buses. So in a couple of years you will no longer see them.
