Many houses in Amsterdam are very small because they used to pay taxes according to the width of their façade. So they built there homes very small but deep. On the gable you will notice a pulley. As the stairs were very narrow and steep it was impossible to get the goods and furniture inside this way, so every house has a pulley on the outside to lift the goods.

ozalp Thu Jan 10, 2008 09:57 UTC Hi Helga. Thanks to your tips, I finally remembered the name of iron poles of Amsterdam. I noticed one of them in Kadikoy-Istanbul in November and I am expecting to solve the mystery someday. I really missed that beautiful city. | Luchonda Tue Dec 18, 2007 21:10 UTC Knap stukje over A'dam, objectief en door de ogen van een ervaren reiziger. Berlijn is beter, maar waar blijft je report, looking forward; Greetz and happy end of the year 2007 | breughel Thu Oct 11, 2007 16:26 UTC .... | vpeter Thu Aug 2, 2007 05:15 UTC Ha Helga, nog nooit zo'n mooie 'liefdesverklaring' aan onze Amsterdammertjes gelezen. Groet uit Nederland. |
