  • I never had a bad feeling in Amsterdam. I saw a lot of police men walking around in the streets and on many street corners you can see a safety camera hanging, but nevertheless be warned that there is a lot of street crime, especially pickpockets and drugs crime. Pickpockets are the most active when it gets dark and in areas around restaurants and nightclubs on the Leidseplein and in the Red Light District.

At night don't walk alone in dark and narrow streets in the Red Light District.

  • If you are strolling along the Red Light District and you want to shoot some pics of this area, make sure you don't take detailed pics of the "ladies". If you do so, there is a change that their pimp will take your camera away or just destroy it. So be warned.

Crossing the streets / Traffic: Watch out for the bikers

  • I have never seen more bikes than in Amsterdam. Normal bikes, odd bikes, family bikes, colourful bikes, transport bikes ... Amsterdam is really a cycler's city. But be aware, it seems that the cyclists have their own rules, they cycle everywhere, very fast, don't stop for red lights or pedestrians ...

When you want to cross the street, look twice and let the bikers pass first, otherwise you have the change to get hit or shouted at.

Hi Helga. Thanks to your tips, I finally remembered the name of iron poles of Amsterdam. I noticed one of them in Kadikoy-Istanbul in November and I am expecting to solve the mystery someday. I really missed that beautiful city.

Knap stukje over A'dam, objectief en door de ogen van een ervaren reiziger. Berlijn is beter, maar waar blijft je report, looking forward; Greetz and happy end of the year 2007
