Amsterdam, City of Bikes and Canals

by Helga67 - last update: Oct 28, 2004

I have been to quite some big cities around Europe. And almost every time, I went home with a feeling of not having seen enough, need to come back one day. Why didn't I have that feeling in Amsterdam?

I don't understand why so many people want to visit Amsterdam over other beautiful cities. They take the high-speed train from Paris to Amsterdam and never bother to stop in between. Yes, I'm talking about Antwerp ;-)

It can only be because of the Sex and Drugs, or am I wrong?

What did I like about Amsterdam? Well it has some charming canals and beautiful houses along the canals, some great musea and a variety of excellent exotic restaurants.

What didn't I like about Amsterdam?
Few remarkable buildings, boring architecture, awful smell of coffeeshops, way too many tourists, been adressed in English everywhere, although I speak Dutch, not that I mind speaking English, but it says a lot about the influence of tourists and the disappearance of own "identity".

Well, at least I am satisfied that I have a new blue spot on my map and that I can make a new page ;-), but will I ever go back? No

Hi Helga. Thanks to your tips, I finally remembered the name of iron poles of Amsterdam. I noticed one of them in Kadikoy-Istanbul in November and I am expecting to solve the mystery someday. I really missed that beautiful city.

Knap stukje over A'dam, objectief en door de ogen van een ervaren reiziger. Berlijn is beter, maar waar blijft je report, looking forward; Greetz and happy end of the year 2007
