Gin museum, Hasselt
In the National Gin museum you can discover all about the history and the whole production process that goes into making Belgian Gin, also called jenever. At the end of the tour you can try a glass of gin.
If you are with a group, it is very interesting to take a guided tour. This can be ordered through the Tourist office (in advance). It costs 30 EUR for 1.15h.
Address: Witte Nonnenstraat 19, Hasselt
In the Raamstraat no. 17, you can find a fine example of industrial architecture. In the early 1800s this was a distillery.
Virga Jesse Basilica
Since 1682, every seven years Virga Jesse is celebrated in folkloric festivities. The statue of Virga Jesse will be carried through the streets, beautifully decorated for the occasion. During every event, people of Hasselt or organisations donate something to the basilica. In 1982, this glass window was donated .
The Tourist Office offers different thematic routes through Hasselt. One of them is the 'Historical City Walk', which takes you to places of interest, monuments and historical façades in Hasselt. If you combine the walk with a visit to one or two musea, lunch, and some stops for some Belgian beer or the Hasselt's Gin, you'll need an entire day.
The brochure is in Dutch, English, German or French and costs 2.50 EUR.

Across the street from the 'Demermanneke' we continue our walk via the Molenpoortplein, left to the Minderbroederstraat and via the passage 'Walputsteeg' back to the point of departure, the city hall.
Have a stop at the Walputsteeg. It's a lovely alley full of drink and eat oppportunities.
Directions: Behind the city hall
In the 13th century, when the first walls were built around Hasselt, there was not enough water within the city walls. At that time, the Demer, a river close to Hasselt, was derived and brought to the city. Water was important for the industry in the city. The town council needed someone to maintain the river, keep it clean. He was called the 'Demermanneke'.
Coming out of the passage, we go straight ahead to the Botermarkt. Here you can find the 'Dry Dragonders'. A part of the house is built in the 16th century. Until the 18th century a pillory was found in front of this house.
At Maastrichterstraat no 70, we take the passage to the Hemelrijk. This is a lovely, cosy passage with a lot of green.
Another beautiful half-timbered house in the Maastrichterstraat at no. 65. It was used as a coin workplace, distillery and inn.
This fountain symbolizes the economical cycle of the gin industry. The pulp of the distilled grain was given to the pigs and cows. The animal's manure was used to better the grain fields. Better ground, more grain, more raw materials for the gin industry and more food for the animals.
Once a year, during the gin festivities in October, real gin is coming out of the fountain.
