This region in the north of France is best known for its beautiful Flemish cities with noble town houses, magnificent city halls, ornate churches and some of the country's finest art collections. This was the result of a flourishing textile and coalmine industry up to the 20th century.
But you will also find many wounds of the first world war. War memorials, battlefields and cemeteries are what is left of the cruel war. It was among the fields and villages of the Somme, that the main battle lines of World War I were drawn.
