  • Arched high over the Grand Canal, Ponte di Rialto is the most famous of the city's bridges. The bridge was constructed by Antonio di Ponte in 1591. It is in the centre of the city's old trading area and trades such as wine, coal and iron are still reflected in the nearby street names. To this day, shops are strung along this famous bridge, selling jewellery, linens and Murano glass.

  • This Venetian Gothic palace was given the name Ca’ d’Oro or House of Gold because the facade was once gilded, but over time it has suffered from erosion. Ca’ d’ Oro houses the Franchetti Gallery, which is dedicated to Venetian Byzantine Art.

  • Venetians say the palazzo has a curse attached to it; certainly the list of former owners who have met sticky ends is impressive - the most recent being Montedison boss Raul Gardini, who committed suicide rather than face charges of corruption. Woody Allen - always keen to court disaster -was once rumoured to have been on the point of buying it.

  • The Palazzo Ducale (Doge's Palace) got its present form after radical changing during the 14th and 16th century. It was the Doge's residence and at the same time seat of many different political and social institutions.

  • The first floor was occupied by minor institutions, such as lawyers offices.
The Grand Council chamber, the largest room of the palace, the Ballot chamber, where the committee met to elect the Doge, and the Doge's apartments are located on the second floor.

  • The Sala del Collegio, where foreign ambassadors were received, and rooms used by the state security service like the Council of Ten are located on the third floor. The Bussola chamber is a small room with a box where citizens could submit written complaints against other citizens.

Nice looking page, very good pics and useful infos. Unfortunately, I don't like Venice, except for Burano.

Excellent Venice page. Oh well, the Campanile bells can be indeed very annoying when being up there. Ehmmm, are you sure that no pigeon was hurt when the Campanile collapsed in 1902? ;-)
