The mill

The mill

The first mention of a water mill of Gosnay dates from the 16th century. It was built next to the river "La Lawe" that floats through Gosnay and was used to grind grain and twist oil until 1977.
Now it is called "Le Nid du Moulin" (the Nest of the mill) and is the home to handicapped adults.

Church in Gosnay - Gosnay

Church in Gosnay

Gosnay's church

In the middle of town next to the main street, you will find the Saint Leger church. The nave and the chorus were entirely dismounted and rebuilt in 1746.
At the occasion of the Jubilee of the birth of Christ, the painter Rene Ducourant made some paintings for a project of Contemporary Sacred Art. You can admire his paintings in the church.

Typical houses

Gosnay is a typical mine workers town. In former days, the people of this village worked in the mines of Bruay, some 5 km west of Gosnay. The mining company had these houses built for its workers. The mining industry is gone, the houses are what is left of that period.

La Chartreuse

La Chartreuse du Mont Sainte-Marie

Before he died, the bischop of Arras, Thierry d'Herichon had planned to found a nuns' monastery next to the friars' convent. His executor, Countess Mahaut wanted to achieve his pious intentions and had a new monastery built, La Chartreuse du Mont Sainte-Marie. In 1773, there were only 24 nuns and 12 novices left under the control of Marie-Albertine de Briois who was their priest and who was guillotined in Arras in 1794.

Directions: Take the last street on your left in the centre of town.
