  • Tiki Village is a cultural and folkloric center, which can be visited by day or in the evening.

    What to see and do?
how to carve tikis from stone, how to sculpt wooden bowls, weave a hat, make a floral crown and tie-dye a pareo. You can get a traditional Tahitian or Marquesan tattoo and learn how the ancient Tahitians built their homes and meeting houses.

The Tiki Village is open daily from 11:30 am to 3 pm (closed on Monday). The entrance fee is 3200 CFP.

Each Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evening the 60 dancers and musicians at the Tiki Village Theater present a Polynesian extravaganza with typical Polynesian dance and fire dancers.

  • What makes Moorea so special are its two breathtaking bays: Cook's Bay and Opunohu Bay. The views here, especially of the mountains, are wonderful. The peaks that you can see from the bay are the basaltic remains of a crater's interior wall.

  • This bay is the more unspoiled bay of the two bays. It is here where Captain Cook actually achored in 1769 and where the movie "The Bounty" was filmed.
It is the Polynesians' favorite bay because it is less populated, and has small secluded beaches.

  • Cook's Bay is a popular bay surrounded by very jagged mountains. In this bay large cruise ships come to moor and here you'll find the village of Pao Pao and some small hotels and pensions, and several restaurants. A good place to stay.

  • From Cook's Bay there is a dirty red road leading you to the interior of Moorea, the Pao Pao valley and finally to the Belvedere look-out point.

The valley is covered with pineapple plantations, forests of mahogany, teak, acacia and mangoes.

  • There is no main village in Moorea, only a few tourist centers like Papetoai and Haapiti where the majority of hotels and guest houses are concentrated.
Two more places where most of the churches, schools, supermarkets, small stores, banks and restaurants are located are the villages of Maharepa and Pao Pao (Cook's Bay).

Cook's Bay / Opunohu Bay: Moua Puta

  • Moua Puta, which means split rock, is a 830 meter- (2739 feet) high mountain with a hole in its top. The hole is said to have been made by a spear of Pai, a favourite son of the gods of old Polynesia, who was warned that Hiro, god of thieves, wanted to steal the sacred Rotui mountain and take it home to Raiatea. The warrior Pai threw a spear from Tahiti that pierced the top of Moua Puta and the noise woke up all the roosters on Moorea, who crowed so loudly that the thieves were forced to flee.

  • Here's a closer look of Moua Puta. I've turned the picture 90° to the left, because in this way you can see that the top of the mountain resembles a lady's face. The hole is the white spot under her nose.

  • You can go around the island on a paved road along the coast for 60 kilometers (34 miles) where you will see thatched roof fares with bamboo walls, little shacks with tin roofs and lovely villas with stone walls. Most of the inhabitants live on the mountainside of the road.
