  • Fondest Memory: The legend says that Ruahatu, king of the ocean, created the crystalline lagoons of the fjord-like bays. Tane, the Polynesian god of beauty, bordered the lagoons with white sand beaches and planted the majestic coconut palms.

  • Favorite Thing: The waters of Moorea are ideal to discover an extraordinary marine fauna. The water temperature is very pleasant and the crystal clear quality makes it a pleasure to swim around freely and without danger.

    General Tips: Where to stay?

  • Favorite Thing: There are two great areas in Moorea. One is around Cook's Bay where you will have a splendid view of the Bay and the surrounding mountains. The bay is also a great place for snorkeling.
The second is on the west side of the island around Haapiti where you will have a beautiful blue lagoon and a white sand beach. Most hotels, hostels, familiy pensions and campground are located around these two places.

I've been to both areas and in my opinion if you only visit Moorea, I recommend you to stay around Haapiti where you will have the real exotic feeling you expect when coming to French Polynesia.
But if you combine your visit in Moorea with Bora Bora, I recommend you to stay in Cook's Bay, it's so different and magical and you will have plenty of white sand beaches with palmtrees on Bora Bora.

  • Favorite Thing: We discovered the island by a guided tour in a 4 x 4. It was a wonderful experience. They will show you Moorea's most breathtaking scenery. You will go around the coastal road, in the interior valleys, up the mountains and to the waterfalls of Afareaitu. You will visit a fruit juice factory and distillery, and sample a drink at a Happy Hour.

  • Fondest Memory: We especially enjoyed our stay at the Kaveka hotel because of the great snorkeling. The hotel is situated close to a very good coral reef with a lot of fish. The hotel's pier will lead you to the deep waters with excellent snorkeling close to the coral reefs.

  • Favorite Thing: Here I was standing at the end of the pier looking into the water. See how deep the coral reef is here and how many fish are around. We liked to go into the water at this spot and swim between the fish.

  • Favorite Thing: At Kaveka hotel, the restaurant is ideally located above the bay and the fish know that. They are used to swim near the restaurant for their breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The hotel usually has some old bread to feed the fish. It was our daily ritual to feed the fish after breakfast.

Hey Helga, your beautiful photos make me impatient to get to Moorea. Was your 4x4 tour a half or full day tour? Best wishes, Sissi
