Some 220 km (136 miles) to the northwest of Tahiti lies one of the largest islands of the Leeward Society islands in French Polynesia. |
A panorama of green carpeted mountains, azure shoals and indigo bays welcome you to the islands of Raiatea and Tahaa, encircled by one of the largest lagoons in Polynesia. This make the islands ideal for water sports and underwater activities. |
Raiatea is regarded as being the cradle of all Polynesian civilizations, it keeps very impressive archeological remains. |

Kakapo2 Fri Apr 24, 2009 05:36 UTC Another great island, good tips and wonderful photos. Sissi | MaoriBoyNZ Tue Jan 6, 2009 02:55 UTC Hi Helga I am a NZ Maori. 27 generations ago our ancestors migrated to NZ around 950AD. Taputapuatea was very old then. If 1600AD it is an officially accepted date there, then please google Maori history and correct those official sources. MaoriBoyNZ | Sharrie Wed Nov 9, 2005 09:25 UTC I'll have to learn how to scuba-dive! But this will be the place I return next time :-) | cazz38 Tue Feb 22, 2005 19:58 UTC Helga this looks like paradise, lovely pictures. |
