The island of Tahiti is located in the Windward Islands of the Society archipelago of French Polynesia. This is the largest of the 118 islands and atolls.
Don't imagine yourself lying on a sandy white beach, because most beaches are of a volcanic black sand beach. Touring the island, you will notice that the interior is for the most part inaccessible except by four wheel drive vehicles or on foot. The valleys have picturesque rivers with some great waterfalls and you can visit the botanical garden and Gauguin museum or learn more about polynesian life in the Musee de Tahiti et des Iles. Papeete, the capital city, is a bustling place with good restaurants, nightlife and shops.
This is the perfect island for starting or ending your trip to the more romantic and exotic islands of French Polynesia.

kid-keith Mon Aug 14, 2006 11:05 UTC Nice pages on Tahiti, pleasure to read, would love to go there one day. | AKtravelers Sat Jun 3, 2006 19:14 UTC We spent one cruel hour laying over in Tahiti on the way to NZ. Apparently ther's more to the place than the airport! Great page. | globerover Sat Feb 4, 2006 21:31 UTC This is such a beautiful island, one of the places I always wanted to see, so I wonder what turned Pomare V into a drunkyard. I trust that kings have more pleasant ways to kill themselves :-) | FletteMette Sun Oct 9, 2005 15:26 UTC I spent a couple of hours on the airport here, on my way to the Cook Islands - hopefully I'll go back some day!! Lovely pics! ~Mette~ |
