At the end of Avenue des Champs Elysees, Arc de Triomphe stands triumphantly in the middle of Place Charles de Gaulle. Twelve avenues lead to the Arc, carrying names of important French military leaders (Marceau, Foch ...) After the victory of the battle of Austerlitz in 1805, Napoleon promised his soldiers a monument of triumph where they could come after every victory. Construction began in 1806 but only finished in 1836. Nowadays, it's the point of departure for many parades. You can go up to the top to have a wonderful view over Champs-Elysees. Unfortunately, during our visit it was closed for renovation works. Open: 09.30-23.00 (apr-oct) and 10.00-22.30 (nov-mar). There is an underground passageway to get to the middle of the square.

From the west side of the Arc de Triumphe, you will notice some skyscrapers and another arch. This area, called 'La Defense' is the business center of Paris. It is said that this is the biggest one of Europe. Here, you will find many French and international multinationals. The hollow cube in the middle is called "La Grande Arche" and was built in 1989. Elevators will bring you to the top for another great view of Paris.

If money is no problem and you want something special, Avenue Montaigne is the street to shop. Here, you will find Christian Dior and other high fashion houses. I do not have that kind of money, but it was lovely to stroll along all the houses on a red carpet! and dream of that special dress. :-) The Avenue is situated at the round point, half way up the Avenue des Champs-Elysees.

The Seine is the river that splits Paris in two different parts, the right bank in the north and the left bank in the south. It's lovely to stroll along the river, where you will find many bookstalls. But even better is to make a trip on one of the typical Seine boats, called bateaux mouches. As most of the important French buildings are close to the Seine, you will have a good view from the water to see them all in a relaxing way.

Have a closer look at the bridge and its fine lampposts and sculptures of nymphs and cherubs. I liked this bridge very much.

Standing on the Pont Alexandre III and looking towards the left bank, you will have a great view of the shining Dome des Invalides. The church was built by King Louis XIV in 1670 and was meant as the private Royal tombe. This, however, never happened and in 1840 it became the resting place of Napoleon, more than 19 years after his death.

thinking Sun May 17, 2009 16:02 UTC Pollution, traffic, higher prices than anywhere on the planet for mediocre food and wine, and lack of any customer service is what you will experience here. It is historically interesting if French medieval history is your concern. | schnarf Tue Mar 24, 2009 16:30 UTC The worst restaurant experience I have ever had and want to have. Beautiful setting and decor but I noted 1 hour and 5 minutes and we hadn't got a bottle of water or wine after asking 3 times....complete mis management since the moment we sat down.. | Luchonda Sun Dec 3, 2006 16:30 UTC Lovely Paris - Good to know about the location of Ibis Hotel, and taking the Thalys is comfortable | assmac123 Fri Oct 20, 2006 18:12 UTC liked your info on the paris metro system very well put together..well done..helga67 |
