"Hadrian's Wall" Northumberland by Helga67
Northumberland Travel Guide: 361 reviews and 1,140 photos
Between AD 122 and 139 the Roman Emperor Hadrian ordered that a defensive wall should be built to discourage the independent Scottish tribes from marauding into the largely pacified territory to the south.
Today the Hadrian's wall still stands as a remarkable monument to the Roman occupation of Britain. It stretches 117 km (73 miles) from Wallsend-on-Tyne to Bowness. It was built of stones and turf, which was available in the area. Along its length were 20 or so major forts, interspersed with milecastles and signal towers close enough together to allow the quick transference of a warning by fire beacon.

Mooie foto's van deze indrukwekkende muur. Wij waren er afgelopen september in veel minder mooi weer (hoort bij Engeland).
Great photo of the wall, doesn't look so bleak here!! Always been cold and windy on our visits!! Oh, and wet.
have yet to see Hadrian's Wall myself!
Love the opening photo. You write tips slower than I do!
