A place of awe and wonder

by morgenhund - last update: Nov 12, 2006

An incredible metropolis

View from the Hotel Rossiya
Moscow is a truly incredible city, and whilst I can understand that it may not be high on everyone's travel priorities, I would have to say that it is a place you should definitely find the time to visit at least once. My first view of Red Square, the Kremlin and St Basils Cathedral are things that I'll never forget - but there is far more to see than these "highlights".

The first trip I made to Moscow was in August 2005 - I returned again in November 2006 - in summer the temperatures hit the 30s - for the duration of my second stay they were well below freezingand there were regular snowfalls.
Onion domes on St George's Church, Varvarka street

Onion domes everywhere

One of the things I couldn't get enough of was in Moscow were onion-domed churches - so here for your enjoyment are a selection of them:

The Church of Christ the Saviour
St George's Church
Kazan' Cathedral
St Basils Cathedral

Pros:"incredible architecture, rich heritage and an array of wonders await..."
Cons:"you may only see a sanitised version of the city"
In A Nutshell:"somewhere to do at least once before you die..."

A really informative and enjoyable read Mike - great stuff! I'd no idea Stalin had such attractive sisters!! Those Communist statues are extraordinary aren't they? But the one of Stalin's victims is really quite haunting.
