"Get there now, before everyone else does!" These words were words spoken by an Austrian friend way back in the mid 1990s - and sure enough he was right. Everyone heads to Prague nowadays and the place is a veritable tourism cash-cow. I very much enjoy visiting Prague, and given the fact that it is relatively easy to reach, it means that I do not have the pressure of trying to do absolutely everything in a single visit - to do so means that you have to tear around at breakneck speed and go berserk. Prague should be enjoyed at leisure like a fine cigar or a good wine. Take your time and see it over days and weeks rather than hoping to do it in a day!
These words were written back in 2005 when I headed to Prague with my then girlfriend. They still ring true in 2008 - the city is swarming with tourists like bees around a honey pot trying to do everything at break-neck speed, which is the wrong way to go about things. For some of the sites, such as the Karolvy Most, there is no good time to see it - it will always be crowded. |
