Celtic Spain : Galicia

by Nexus7 - last update: Aug 21, 2005

Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela
Galicia is a very distinct area of Spain, much like Catalunya or the Basque Country. They have their own language which is a dialect of Portugues, and widely spoken by the populace, but Spanish is obviously commonplace. But you can see the influence everywhere. The descendants of Galicia are celtic, which is why the official instrument is a sort of bagpipe. The invading Muslims never made it this far North and the Visigoths never made it here either. So the inhabitants look rather celtic, to say the least and have a culture that still holds true to those traditions. While I was in Gallicia, I visited Pontevedra, Vigo, A Coruna, Sanxenxo, Cambados, Betanzos and Santiago.
