Surfing in Brazil

I am not a surfer and never did it, but as I am an experienced traveller around Brazil I am sure that -if you are a surfer and want to practise it there- you will find great places to surf around! Generally brazilian beaches have good and huge waves, so it must be a surfer's paradise! :-)
Especially known for good surfing are:

Florianopolis: Praia da Joaquina (south of Brazil)
Saquarema: (150 kms north from Rio)
Rio de Janeiro: Barra da Tijuca beach

If you want to be in Rio de Janeiro and to surf there, I have also a very good friend in Rio (native carioca, but not surfer) who does speak english and know very well the beaches (Barra da Tijuca, Saquarema, etc.), he maybe could meet you up and go with you to the places of interest.....just write me, if you are interested!

Equipment: Another great place to surf between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo is Itamambuca beach in Ubatuba. Ubatuba has 50 beaches and many of them are good to surf and usually gather the surf crowd. See "Surf Ubatuba" webpage:

Itamambuca helds an international surf competition in July which is a great ocasion to visit the place.
