Is Rio de Janeiro really this dangerous ..??? and other Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Warning Or Danger Tips

Rio has always had a petty crime problem just like any other big city in the world.
Many people might think that the city is really dangerous, because everybody tell just this....
but I have to tell you that I myself hadn't any problem yet while walking in Rio, even at night and in the northern suburbs, where tourists normally don't go! (Have been there because my friend I always stayed at has been living there)
The problems which appeared in 2003 around Carnival time were problems
between the authorities and the drug lords in the favelas, yes they were burning buses and some people were getting hurt, but this seldom spills over to the tourist areas like Ipanema or Copacabana. My parents have been there exactly this time and they had no problems!!!
Go to Rio, keep your ears and eyes open for the little theft and you should be all right and have fun on the beach and don't worry about whats going on in the favelas in Rio !

While you are in Rio just relax the great atmosphere and do not always think of muggings etc. ...just use common sense and you will probably be fine!

Don't walk down dark lonely streets at night or in parks, there are often people who are looking for someone they could mugg.

At the beaches (not only Copacabana) do not leave anything on your towel while you go swimming or it will be gone.
Better you go without anything heavy to the beach, only your towel, some money to buy something to eat or drink from the beach -vendors (about 10-15 Reais are okay) and yourself, leave your belongings in the hotel-safe cofre).
When you go out only take enough money with you that you will use for that day (around 50 Reais should be fine for the day, unless you want to buy some presents or want to eat in a 5-star rerstaurant).
Take copies of your passports and take them with you when going out, the originals leave in your hotel.
Leave some money in your pockets for the thieves and the rest hidden in a money belt or a hidden pocket.
If someone try to mugg you give them some money, so that they are satisfied and do not try to run away or shouting, ...normally people around or even police-men won't try to help you in this situation...(have always heard this) so it's better you give some money away than to risk that they hurt you in any way!
If you had given some money the thieves normally disappear rather fast to not be catched by the police.
