When you go to the beach, don’t forget to drink from the refreshing coconuts that you can buy in the small kiosks based everywhere along the beach, or from street vendors everywhere. They are the best refresh in brazilian hot weather and the water stays cool for a long time ...beer or water get's hot extremely fast! When you walk Rio’s streets, don’t miss the extremely good fruit-juices (called "sucos" in portuguese) sold everywhere for just R$1,30 to R$2,50. I’m not passionate when it comes to fruit but during my journeys to Brazil, I have drunk an unbelievable amount of fruit-juices. There are great juice bars all over Rio with different fresh fruit juices with exciting exotic names like siriguela, taperaba, sapoti, graviola, acerola, cupuacu, abacaxi, uva, ...etc.
Favorite Dish: My favourite fruit juice is abacaxi...pineapple! If you are there to buy one juice, just say: "Gostaria um suco de ..... -laranja : orange - uva: grape - maca: apple - morango: strawberry - limao: lemon - caju: cashew - mamao: papaya - banana: banana - abacaxi: pineapple - melancia: watermelon The other names of fruits like "graviola, cupuacu, acerola", etc. you just have to taste...hmmmm...delicious!!! To buy fresh coconut water you say: "Gostaria agua de coco..."

The Colombo Bakery is a real living portrait of the Belle Époque in the Downtown Business Center of Rio de Janeiro. It keeps an art nouveau style of the beginning of the century. The cakes (and besides there are also other salty dishes available) are delicious and the atmosphere is wonderful! Restaurant Name: Habib's
As I just mentioned the brazilian fast food (or tipical american one) I also have to tell you that in Rio there are several filials from arabish fast food, called Habib's. The food there is very very delicious too, all those little salted things (salgadinhos) like "kibe", "pastel", and "esfihas", not to tell you that they also offers Sanduiches and of course delicious sweety things like "Mousse de Chocolat" and "Creme de Papaia". So if you come along of one filial enter it and taste of the food....yummmyyyyy!!!
Favorite Dish: If you want to see the dishes they offer, please go to: http://www.habibs-fast-food.com. br/cardapio/f_cardapio.htm

devzan_45 Fri Nov 28, 2008 20:14 UTC Detailed & informative tips.Very handy for travellers for the first time. | zingadoon Mon Feb 25, 2008 16:31 UTC The people running these tours are making a killing: they charge 50 bucks, pay the kid who shows you around a peanut, then claim your money goes to a charity to help poor favela folk. Assholes, exploitors. Oi vey. | 88Starflite Sun Oct 8, 2006 05:08 UTC Thanks for all the hotel details, you really put together a great travel page. | oceania26 Wed Sep 13, 2006 15:56 UTC Excellent tip on rehearsals! Unfortunately I won't be able to see any - I'm in Rio from Nov30th to Dec 5th :-( |
