Getting TO/AROUND: VIE is linked to the world by many airlines (Austrian Airlines, Lauda Air, Lufthansa, British Airways, Air France, KLM, Iberia, SAS, ect.) and also offers good connections to Eastern Europe. And now a couple of low cost carriers connect Vienna to Germany (Air Berlin, Germanwings).

Getting TO/AROUND: Vienna is also well linked to the rest of Europe by train (Austrian Federal Railway). There are 3 main stations: Westbahnhof, Südbahnhof and Nordbahnhof /western, southern and northern train terminal)

Getting TO/AROUND: The old city of Vienna and the surrounding districts (number 1 to 9 and 20) are 'pay & display short-stay-parking-zones'. When you park here you need a valid parking permit (to be bought in a 'Tabak Trafik' - tobacco store and at hotels) behind your windscreen from the first minute of your stay. The signs indicating the short stay parking zones are only posted where you enter these districts (it also happened to me that I got a ticket because I didn't know that!). I recommend you to leave the car somewhere out of the inner city and use the efficient public transport system! 30 min are 0.4 Euro. Fines are 21 Euro. 10 min are for free but you have to fill out a special permit for it!

Getting TO/AROUND: Transportation within Vienna is very easy: 5 lines of underground trains (U1, U2, U3, U4, U6), train lines, many tramways and bus-lines to bring you anywhere in the city! Fares effective from June, 1st 2002: One way ticket: € 1,50 (bought at ticket boots); € 2,00 (bought in buses or trams).! 24-hour-ticket costs € 5,00; 72-hour-ticket costs € 12,00; 8-days-ticket costs € 24,00 (to be used by more than 1 person travelling together, the best value!); There is no more extra-ticket to be bought for the Nightline-buses no: the regular tickets are valid!

Getting TO/AROUND: To get to Vienna by car is also a good idea: from the west you follow the A1 (for southern districts take the A21), from the south you take the A2 (coming from Graz) or the A3 (coming from Eisenstadt), from the east you take the A4 (via the airport), and from the north the A22. On all those roads you must have a 'Vignette' (toll sticker) on the car's window screen!
