Tongli is a town with a profound cultural background and achievement. From ancient times, it has been teeming with poets, painters, Confucian scholars and government officials.

Intersected by so many canals, it is like a town floating on the water.

It is known to most people in the west as 'The Venice of the East'.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:At least China is trying to preserve old buildings for once!
  • Cons:It will soon become too touristy to enjoy

Thanks for the tip on the multi-lingual menus! Yikes, washing cutlery in the river.

Funny tip about the Cafe menu in English. I think I would be a bit skeptical, too, if I saw them cleaning the dishes in the river. Here in Germany you can get blood sausage at any butcher shop or supermarket, by the way.

The milk powder is for diabetics. I always touted Tongli over Zhouzhuang as an ideal canal town, even before the China Sex Museum was discreetly moved there from Shanghai. My favorite menu item is "ma yi shang shu" (Ants climbing trees)
