Suzhou is located in the south of Jiangsu province, some 50 miles west of Shanghai, along the old Grand Canal. The city has been famous for its gardens for many centuries.
All the canals are lined with whitewashed houses with grey-tiled rooves, eventually joining up with the famous local waterway known as the Grand Canal, located to the west of the city. It is believed to be the largest internal waterway in the world.
Although the canal is not used for long-distance transport today, it is still heavily used by a great number of flat-bottomed boats under sail and engine power conveying agricultural produce to nearby towns.

I well remember that rainy day in Suzhou - i did enjoy climbing the pagoda - pity you didn't manage the nine floors - what a wonderfu view!!!
an honest account. thanks. I still have to discover this more traveled part of China. But whatever awaits, I know I won't regret it. I'm looking forward to everything not experienced. :-)
very nice page. i was there a few years ago and should go back again this year again.
......... go round & round, all the way to town (or in this case round Suzhou.lol!) Gr8 updates Vicky! No way I can compete with Confucius for witty repartee!
Good thing you didn't stay for dinner at the Nanlin Hotel restaurant. I've heard that inconvenienced guests receive a complimentary appetizer of silkworms...
Great memories of a lovely day spent here, in the pouring rain. But even so, none of the charm was lost on me. Lovels pics Victoria.
