My years in England

by sugarpuff - last update: Jan 31, 2004

Typical sight in the Capital
My parents were both born in England,my grandparents were born in England, my relatives all live in England, but when I came along, I changed the pattern! Being born in Gibraltar gives me an advantage. It has the edge over being born in England as although it is still a British colony and has many English elements to it, being at the entrance to the Mediterranean gives it that Latino character to it. But due to Gibraltar being so small, when its time to go to university, we all head off to the UK. And this was when my travels in England began.......

Places I have visited include London (where my cousins and aunt live), Leeds (where I studied at university for four years), Derby (where a friend from Gib was studying at uni), suburbs of London (where I have family friends and people Ive met over the years),Hull (where my best friend from Gibraltar was studying) and other places which I really cant remember just now, but they'll come back to me over time Im sure!

Friends of mine from China who study in the UK all seem to complain about how they dont have the opportunity to meet English people as their courses are mainly foreigners learning business and commerce.I found this the case when I was studying in China too, but one thing we all agree on, is that when you go travelling around Britain, everything changes! You can be going from one city to another and the history will be completely different with wonderfully old buildings and people who are willing to explain the background to everything. This is slightly different in London however. I feel that Londoners are so busy they dont have time to stop and help a tourist with a question..mind you they probably get asked so many things by the million of visitors to the capital every year, that you would kind of get annoyed after a while! If Im wrong or people who have been to London disagree with me, I'd be happy to hear your comments about the city!

You're right about the price of taxis - it's appalling. As for the thing about the chavs - that's priceless. Speaking of which, have you ever been to Staines?
