| Page Views: 5,420 Last Visit to Beijing Shi: September, 2007 I Live Here | A crazy night sky!!! by sugarpuff - last update: Sep 27, 2007 |
Happy New Year!! Just a little peak at what has been lighting up the skies tonight and for the following week in Beijing! |
| | Seeing is believing..or so they say! Up at 10pm last night after sleeping for seven hours, then stayed awake right though to 10am this morning. The weather looked fabulous so decided I would go for a bike ride before the crowds hit the roads, so off I set at 630am for two hours. Saw some great things and have included them in my 'OFF THE BEATEN PATH' section..hope you enjoy looking at all the pictures, 5 in each tip to browse through!!!This is Beijing......this is my home...well, my home away from home of course! I have been here four times since 1998, the first year to study at a Chinese university, then three months during the following summer holiday to keep my Chinese going...then another year after I graduated, to work and study and then finally a year after I was here for a year, I came back with my boyfriend to live and work! I have been here since Sept 19th 2003. 'WHY?' I hear you ask ....... well pull up a chair, sit back and let me tell you.......I studied Chinese at university for four years, one of which was here in Beijing. Capital Normal University was my home for nine very pleasant months! During my time in China, I met many others who were also here for a year or more studying the language and who to this day I am still in contact with. They were people from all round the world, so hopefully I will have a bed to sleep in in just about every continent I go to!!!! Only kidding!!! I learnt more Chinese in those nine months than I did in my first year at Leeds University in ENGLAND, mainly because all our teachers spoke solely in Chinese and I was surrounded by Chinese EVERYWHERE!!!! Apart from the rigorous studying (!!!) we had a great social life too! Being a student in Beijing is like having the world at your feet! So much to do, so many places to visit and far too many friends to be made! It was brilliant!
Sadly, like all good things, my time was up, and one year later, I was back in GIBRALTAR for the summer hols and then back off up to Leeds to begin my last two years of hell...oh sorry, I meant joy! Leeds was Leeds and will always be great in my eyes, but it was China I was longing to see again...I'd been given a taster, and I wanted MORE! So the summer of 2000 saw me back again in the capital to work as an English teacher. I was teaching at three different schools that summer but having fun and earning a lot of money! And of course, keeping my Chinese going. I was to go back to Leeds that September for my final year and needed to be top notch! |

| | Chinese lanterns really DO exist in China! My last year at university sped past, as does everything that you don't want it to! And then back to Beijing it was!!!! This time it was to work at the BBC, Beijing Bureau. It was so fortunate that I managed to get in contact with them and they must have been impressed with something about me to give me a chance with them. I was just interning, but I had a great time and learnt some useful things! I was with them for 6 months and then when my time was up with them, I moved back to teaching rich Japanese aristocracy (!) and Chinese film stars! It's tough, but someone has to do it, right?!!!
After my visa ran out nine months later, it was back to Gib and there I stayed for one whole year....it's tough living in such a small place when you've seen the big wide world! But it was there that I became friends with Ron, VT name is AFRICAKING, and my boyfriend Charles, VT name FOXCHX. So it wasn't all too bad!!!!
And that brings me up to speed with what Im doing now. Im back in Beijing, having fun, working for China Central Television and living a good life! And 'WHY' did I choose Chinese to study...? Because the easy languages had already been signed up for! |
