Every chance we get we pack the kids into the pickup and make the eight-plus hour drive to the Big Bend region of Texas. After checking out the Terlingua ghost town, we rent horses in nearby Lajitas and roam the quiet beauty of the Big Bend region along the Rio Grande river and the border with Mexico. The people are friendly but keep to themselves. The pace is slow and peaceful. The spirits of bandidos, Rangers, and pioneers abound in the area. The Chisos (ghost) Mountain region looms to the south in Mexico. Some locals live in renovated adobe huts that surround the long-closed mine. Night-time star-gazing is a must (no glare from nearby cities). The seemingly endless expanse of Big Bend National Park invites you to explore again and again. We've been twice and have only seen approximately half of this giant park. From trail rides into Mexican ghost villages, to world-class golf courses, the Terlingua, Lajitas, ang Big Bend area offers a peaceful retreat for anyone. Services are few and far between so pack wisely and plan your fuel stops. Lodging ranges from primitive campsites to for-rent condos overlooking the Rio Grande. Whatever your station, I'm sure you'll enjoy the Big Bend region as much as we do.
