"Russian Carelia (the north-west part of it)" Respublika Kareliya by sinoda
Respublika Kareliya Travel Guide: 427 reviews and 847 photos
Welcome to the homelands of the Kalevala epos - which we Finns consider our cultural roots (at least partially)
The area covers the border lands between Finland and Russian-Carelia on both sides...
One lively example is Jyskyjärvi - located at the south-east end of the Kuittijärvi (lake) and connected via rivers and lakes to Paanajärvi (a village too =) which now is in danger being a victim of russian energy policy. They are planning to build a water power plant and flood the area.
This village is situated on a couple of islands connected by really stunning bridges.

Hyvä sivu! Unfortunately I do not know this part of Karjala, only the one in today's Finland - but I would like to visit it, of course. Happy birthday - albeit one day too late!
What a shame that village due to be flooded. Beautiful countryside and that sure is a wobbly looking tower:-) Some great craftmanship involved in building those log houses.. they're great. Interesting page.
great pictures and tips. thanks!
Really nice and comunicative pics.
This place looks very nice. Great page !
Sinoda thanks for your nice page on Kareliya when I visited in 1997 they were about to close down Ben & Jerry's Ice cream did they??
Very interesting tip, thanks, I'd love to visit Karelia, too!
