Although I have never had anything stolen from me, it is general knowledge that in a large city like Amsterdam, you need to be careful. At the various entries to the Kalverstraat, you see these signs: Let op zakkenrollers! Beware of pickpockets! Hüten Sie sich für Taschendieben! Attention aux Pickpockets! Isn't it funny that the French don't have their own word for pickpockets? Click on the picture to see it properly.

In light of the many Danger/warning tips about Amsterdam, I'd like to show another view. I don't perceive Amsterdam to be unsafe. Here's why: I travelled a lot to Amsterdam for about 2 years when I worked there in the center, just behind Leidseplein (a famous nightlife location). As a woman alone, I walked or took a tram every day to my workplace from Central Station. Often late at night as well. I was never bothered by anyone, simply steered clear of suspicious individuals or groups. And I never felt unsafe. I suppose that exudes a certain confidence which makes you less of a target. Or I've been lucky. Unfortunately, a lot of tourists are attracted to Amsterdam because of coffeeshops and Red Light District. Both are on the fringes of legality. And so one shouldn't be surprised to be confronted with more crime. Or rather: don't complain too much, because one shouldn't seek out trouble, no?

flyingscot4 Sun Feb 8, 2009 05:17 UTC Hi AT, That looks like a car I had in the early 60's. It was the worst piece of junk I ever had, and I didn't have it long. Except for those seats; they just kind of enveloped you. Nice pages. | pieter_jan_v Thu Nov 20, 2008 18:04 UTC Hoeze www.de-engel.net bij jouw Bazar restaurant tip? PJ | ranger49 Tue Oct 7, 2008 19:06 UTC Such a long time since I was in Amsterdam - the city walk with a local sounds an ideal way to get to know the city all over again. | unaS Mon Aug 4, 2008 17:33 UTC Well I can certainly see that having visited for 5 days I still missed a great deal. I must return!!! |
