• On April 1st of each year, Brielle shows itself in medieval style.
On this date Brielle was the first Dutch town to be liberated from 80 year Spanish Occupation.
Here the "Geuzen" (Sea beggars) crash open the city gate.

• Ah, this is mayor Koekebakker of Brielle (1572), who cohorted with the Spanish oppressors and raised a 10% tax on everything in town.
He is put into a cage along with those catholic monks and nuns and taken along the streets in a cage for everyone to see and be shamed.

This festival takes place every 1st of April in Brielle, hometown of ATLC.

Kennetrose came in 2003 to enjoy this historical event and hopefully she'll have a page up soon.

• Everyone dresses up in the costume of the time and chooses the role of citizen, Spaniard, monk, Sea Begger (Geus)... the costume shows which side you are on!
Traditionally, brown beans with bacon are cooked on the street and eaten that day.

• Now the point is that you look silly if you are in ordinary clothes. A potato sack and a hankerchief will do, some old shoes or clogs and the effect is amazing!

Now I would like to show you a picture of the thousands of people that come to see all this. Unfortunately a familiar situation arises: I will have to FIND some pictures.
Hope you enjoyed this though.

• Brielle - BRIELLE GEUZEN FLAG
• BRIELLE GEUZEN FLAG
• by ATLC
• Send Photo to a Friend
• Written by Schooleman in 1934 and sung every year on April 1st.

De Watergeus ligt aan den wal;

Zij wachten bericht binnen 't uur!

De wakkere Geuzen staan tandknersend daar;

4. Hier dringt men naar buiten, daar schuilt men bijeen,
En spreekt over Kopelstoks last:
