Someone asked me about Maastricht. Which made me realise I hadn't even started on a page for one of the most vibrant, and definitely most elegant city of The Netherlands. Joie de vivre!
I wrote to him (somewhere in 2002):
Maastricht is a wonderful city. Visit St. Servaas Basilique, the WWII museum and the caves in the St. Pietersberg mountain. And have a shopping spree!
Best restaurant in Maastricht, in fact one of the top 5 in The Netherlands, is Toine Hermsen (St Bernardusstr 2-4, 6211 HL Maastricht)
And for a midmorning coffee break (if you've had a light breakfast) go have a big piece of "vlaai"...(fruit pie) on the Vrijthof. They serve a great one at Panaché (facing St. Servaas on the famous square Vrijthof): the apple vlaai with warm custard!
Panaché these days is called The Square but has the same delightful "vlaai" with warm vanilla sauce.
