"A visit ended in rain" Ruinerwold by ATLC
Ruinerwold Travel Guide: 8 reviews and 18 photos
Ruinerwold has quite a few brocante shops, a museum farm, various places where you can admire and buy art and regional produce. It's a nice outing for a half day. Unless of course it starts to pour with rain as was in our case. We made for home quickly and will carry on sightseeing later.
Along the road between Meppel and Ruinerwold (called Haakswold) are many farmsteads that have quite fancy architecture. This one went a bit (too?) far with a Chinese version!
There are quite a few places around Meppel (main town in the area) that are worth visiting. However, Meppel is on the brink of two provinces, so you would not be able to detect that if you look at my Travel Page.
You could easily cycle between these places. It's a lovely rural area.

Giethoorn (Venice of the north)
Staphorst (beautiful old farms)
Ruinerwold(stone's throw from Meppel)
Kallenkote (Indonesian bird park)
Frederiksoord(colony of welfare)
Vledder(small village, museum of fake art)
Zwolle (largest town in the area)
Meppel (lively nightlife, shopping, printing museum)
Schiphorst (stately home as exclusive hotel/restaurant, stork farm)
- Pros:Rural, beautiful, quite a few attractions

nice to see that storch, because the dutch storks are used to photographers much better than the ones in other countries, where they disappear as soon as they see me with my camera ;-((
